Tefrom

The Croser family have introduced Tefrom to Maylands Farm, a new breed of sheep from Phillip and Renee's New Zealand Southland where this "composite" breed was developed on Twin Farm.

Maylands farm is the only property in Australia to have this breed, which is very compact and quick growing and has exceptional lamb mothering ability.

"Sea air and grass fed" Maylands Farm lamb is grown to an exacting standard in the most natural way on this beautiful property.

It is with a wry smile that the doughty owner of Twin Farm in the Southland of New Zealand, Russell Welsh describes his new composite breed of lamb as, "Tefrom, the sheep that doesn't stick to the pan."

Tefrom's are very much a New Zealand invention, combining the best genetic expressions of the big framed Romney Marsh breed (50%), the inherent fertility and milking ability of the East Friesian (25%) and the compact body and lean meat characteristics of the Texel (25%).

In 2005 Maylands Farm imported 150 highly selected Tefrom embryos and transplanted them into some Maylands Farm ewes. The 120 lambs that were born are the start of the Maylands Farm Tefrom stud and are quickly and completely changing the genetic composition of the flock at Maylands Farm.

As the breed proves its capacity to foster high fertility rates and provide lambs that grow quickly with the right meat characteristics Maylands Farm will sell Tefrom rams to other Australian prime lamb producers.
