Management

Maylands Farm has fenced off the swamp areas to allow regeneration but the damp peat flats provide an opportunity for grazing all year round.

The Croser family purchased these 600 hectares of farming paradise in 2003 after the takeover of their famous wine company Petaluma.

Their intent is to take up where the very responsible farmers who preceded them at Maylands Farm left off and to further improve the condition of the farm. Increasing the organic matter of the soil, reducing the stocking rates, replanting trees natural to the region and fencing off the native vegetation and the swamps are all parts of an integrated program to allow Maylands Farm to flourish productively well beyond the current generations of ownership.

The previous owner had recruited as managers of the farm, Phillip Bellaney and Renee Diamond from Invercargill at the southern tip of New Zealand just before the sale. Phil and Renee share the Croser family passion for Maylands Farm. They bring with them to Maylands Farm a different farming culture of intensive management and shepherding of the flocks in a way that is foreign to large Australian sheep farms.
